Best way to apply fake nails?

my natural nails are long and pretty, but the problem is that whenever i paint them with nail polish or get a manicure, the polish starts to chip within 2 days. i'm going on vacation soon and want nice nails so i bought a do it yourself thing of fake nails. any tips on how to apply them so that they stay strong & don't fall off?
