How do doctors check for an STD?

I plan on going to the doctors on the 1st of July to get a prescription for birth control AND to get checked if I have a yeast infection or a possible STD. The thing is though, I'm supposed to start my period around that time. Will the docs still be able to perform a pap smear while I'm bleeding? Or is there any possible way to check for an STD?
